David Brayshaw

David Brayshaw is a Professor of Climate Science and Energy-Meteorology, and joint Head of the Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading.  Brayshaw’s interests span both fundamental and applied climate science, with a particular focus on the role of climate science in the energy sector.  He has led contributions to several large multi-national research projects, including two prototype “climate services for energy” (ECEM, S2S4E) and the pan-European advanced climate modelling research programme (PRIMAVERA).  Much of his work is interdisciplinary and in 2022 he won the RMetS Adrian Gill award for Advances at the Interface of Atmospheric Science and Related Disciplines.  Brayshaw founded and chairs the interdisciplinary “Next Generation Challenges in Energy-Climate Modelling” workshop series which regularly brings together more than 100 researchers from around the world, across energy- and climate- science, industry and policy.  Brayshaw is a Fellow of the Royal Meteorological Society and is founding co-chair of its “Energy” special interest group

Plenary 4. Thursday 3 July 15.30-17.30. Understanding energy transitions to accelerate decarbonisation

Energy systems around the world are undergoing rapid and far-reaching change.  From the electrification of transport and heating, through to the growing dependence on renewables and increasing weather-exposure of infrastructure, there is an urgent need for high-quality weather and climate information across all time scales to support the energy transition.  While much progress has been made over the last 10-15 years, there remain many areas of “disconnect”  between energy- and climate- science that need to be addressed to enable deeper exchanges of ideas, data and know-how.  This presentation will outline some of the questions, challenges and opportunities involved.
