Rain Newton-Smith is the CBI’s Chief Executive. She previously served as Managing Director for Strategy, Policy, Sustainability and ESG at Barclays. From 2014 to 2023, she was the CBI’s Chief Economist, leading economic policy, analysis, international work on the B7 and B20, and the organisation’s agenda on the transition to a low carbon economy, including its response to Covid. Before the CBI, Rain was Head of Emerging Markets at Oxford Economics and spent nine years at the Bank of England, including a secondment to the IMF. She holds degrees from Oxford and LSE and is a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader.
