Professor Rowan Sutton is Associate Director of Climate Science for the Met Office and Director of the Met Office Hadley Centre. Rowan joined the Met Office in August 2024 following a career in academic climate research, much of it based at the University of Reading. His personal research interests have focussed particularly on the role of the oceans in climate variability and change.
Between 2009 and 2022 he was Director of Climate Research for the UK National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS), and between 2022 and 2024 he was Research Dean for Environment at the University of Reading. He has served in a wide range of international roles including as Lead Author of the Fifth Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and as Co-Chair of the World Climate Research Programme Lighthouse Activity Explaining and Predicting Earth System Change.
